Commitment to Our Communities

Lodge Thistle Operative No. 158 is heavily involved in charitable giving, community support, and hands‑on volunteering across Dundee and the wider local area. Often focusing on practical help for local causes, vulnerable people, and emergency services.

At a community level, our members often take part in volunteering projects, from organising local events to helping build or maintain community facilities. In conjunction with our affiliated Lodges we also help run youth programmes and educational scholarships, giving young people opportunities to develop skills and access further education.

Freemasons and Charity

As Freemasons, charity is not just a voluntary "good deed"—it is a core pillar of our fraternity’s identity, often referred to within our craft as Relief.

This commitment stems from the philosophical belief that every member has a moral obligation to care for those less fortunate, regardless of whether they belong to our organisation.

By engaging in charitable acts, we aim to practice the brotherly love we preach, viewing our contributions as a practical expression of our personal growth and our desire to be "better men" who leave a positive mark on the world.

Beyond the immediate benefit to the recipients, these activities serve a vital role in strengthening the bond between our lodge and the local community.

Whether through large-scale national donations or quiet, local initiatives like supporting food banks or providing scholarships, charity acts as the bridge between Masonic ritual and real-world impact.

It provides our members with a shared sense of purpose and a tangible way to live out their values, ensuring that the principles of integrity and kindness are translated into meaningful action that supports the vulnerable and enhances society as a whole.

Serving our Community

At Lodge Thistle Operative No.158 we are always keen to engage with like minded people who are willing to work with us in meaningful charitable activities and dedicated community service here in Dundee and the surrounding area.

Our commitment to "giving back" in respect of our commitment to Charity promises immense fulfilment and purpose for all our members, making a tangible positive impact to residents in our communities.

Our “Three Great Principles” are the foundations of Freemasonry and are:

Brotherly Love

Relief

Truth

What do these mean?

Brotherly Love

Being respectful and tolerant of other people, their beliefs and culture. By offering kindness and compassion to all those we meet, not just our fellow Brethren

Relief

Practising charity and offering assistance, this could be financial charitable giving or voluntary work as a lodge or as an individual. This assistance is not only for our Brethren, our family or friends but also our wider communities

Truth

By setting and aiming to achieve high moral standards in life, we as Freemasons hope to discover the truth of living a productive and worthwhile existence that benefits our community

Brotherhood and Fellowship

We pride ourselves on creating an environment designed to exceed your expectations and provide a profound sense of belonging among our members.

That strong sense of belonging turns individual effort into something larger and more involving. It replaces "I must" with "we will".

And in that supportive environment the shift from "me" to "us" helps our member Brothers discover they can achieve far more together than they ever could apart.
